Polynesian Massage
Polynesian massage is the most pleasurable of
all the different massage techniques. An original teacher in
Polynesia introduced me to this delightful art form in its
original setting. Besides their art of massage, these beautiful
peoples' life philosophy will also stay with me for the rest
of my life.
Let me describe the setting:
The people of the village stand in a circle around
the "altar", where the receiver lies on a soft bed
of grasses and flowers. A beautiful song starts with gentle
tones and rhythm. In the background, four or five others are
playing traditional instruments. The Elder Healer Man gives
thanks to the Spirit, then begins the massage with sensitive,
rhythmical strokes using the song as a guide to his movements.
The people increase the tempo of the song and start to sway
and perform graceful dance movements using their arms, torso
and hips. During the song and the dance, amid smiling faces,
continuous good will gestures expressing healing and happiness
are radiated towards the person receiving the massage. The
words of the song are expressing the same.
